Tucked away in the northwest region of Georgia lies a small city, Austell, that is filled with history that speaks of a larger story of growth and change throughout the American South. On its own level, its roots, particularly based on the railroad and its natural springs, are quite fascinating.
Austell dates back to the 19th century when it was first settled. The town was named after General Alfred Austell, who was an influential businessman and banker from Atlanta. In the early years of its existence, General Austell played a pivotal role in developing this area. General Austell was behind the move to build the Georgia Pacific Railway that facilitated the growth and development of the area. When the railroad came through in the 1880s, it was an event which turned Austell into a boomtown filled with activity and commerce.
The Civil War was a great change that swept through the region. While Austell itself never was a battlefield, the war did upset life for the people here and railroad operations. Once that conflict had passed, the community worked to rebuild and recover once more with the railroad again at the center of that resurgence.
The beginning of the 20th century brought additional growth and modernization to Austell. The town was always adding to its structure with new roads, schools, and businesses contributing to its growth. Similar to most small towns, Austell had maintained its quirkiness but tended to move with the times. One added advantage was being an Atlanta suburb, thus able to take part in the larger economic opportunities yet still maintain its own character.
Today, Austell is a successful community that not only acknowledges its historical past but continues to surge forward into the future. The community is now part of Atlanta’s metropolitan area, offering each citizen a slice of suburbia accompanied by the amenities of the big city. It has an expansive population with cultural diversities in recreation and education.
Conservation efforts on Austell’s historical heritage are manifested in the maintenance of historical sites and buildings. Events and programs are organized by the Austell Historical Society to enlighten the residents and visitors to the city about its history. In so doing, it helps remember Austell’s history, especially legacies of the early settlers and those of the railroad.
From healing springs to the development of railroads to community resilience, Austell, GA, was born from quite an interesting past. It was one of stories of growth, adaptation, and preservation—from its humble beginnings as a place of health retreat to being one of the thriving suburban communities of today. The city grew but was never very far from its historical origins in that it still continues celebrating its heritage that shaped its identity and future.
